Every three or four years, the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, Colonel Edward Bolitho visits RCHT at our request to receive an update on health matters relating to the Cornish community which he can report back to the royal household in his role as HM’s representative in the Duchy.

So it was a great pleasure to host a morning with the Lord Lieutenant and several of his deputies at the Royal Cornwall Hospital on 21st June 2023. Both RCHT Chairwoman Mairi McLean and Chief Executive Steve Williamson were on hand to welcome our guests at a briefing which included an update on RCHT’s strategy for the next 10 years. Specifically, there were short presentations on the physical and digital transformations that will take place at RCHT between now and 2028 with the progression and completion the Women and Children’s Hospital building programme and the introduction of Electronic Patient Records.

It was also a great privilege to take our VIPs on a walk-around of the site – showcasing the brand new Trelawny Scanning Unit and Lowen Ward’s forever home, and the new Critical Care Healing Garden which is due to host its first patient next month. They also visited the site of what will be our new Women and Children’s Hospital, and new main entrance, and discussed the challenges of the build as well as great benefits that will come from a dedicated unit, once complete.

Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, Colonel Edward Bolitho said: “All of us who were lucky enough to be on the visit came away far better informed about all that is going on in RCHT and the exciting prospects for the future. But most of all, we were all inspired to see the extraordinary dedication, skill and enthusiasm for their work shown by everyone we met.  Thank you for a really positive morning.”

Our thanks to clinical colleagues and those from the strategic estates project teams, who made themselves available to take questions from the delegates as they walked the site and learned of our exciting plans. And our thanks to Colonel Edward Bolitho and his team of deputies for taking the time to visit RCHT, and for showing great interest in our future plans.
