A Strategic Lead Admiral Nurse alongside her team from Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust (RCHT) have been shortlisted for two awards at the inaugural Dementia Care Awards, which celebrate outstanding practice in dementia services.

Caroline Ellis is a finalist in the Dementia Nurse and Dementia Outreach categories. Caroline and her admiral nurse team who work in partnership with Dementia UK and Cornwall Foundation NHS Trust, support carers and families of a person with dementia when they are admitted to RCHT.

Admiral Nurse Team, Caroline Ellis, Hayley Townsend, Sarah Arundell and Helen Bosanko-Green.

They have developed the Supporting Ahead Programme (SAP), which helps families and carers to connect with dementia services and organisations as well as providing support to families at any point in the dementia pathway.

As part of the programme, events take place quarterly, enabling carers to come together to not only learn from professionals and access immediate support for their caring role, but also to share and discuss their own experiences, increasing peer support and reducing social isolation.

SAP has been shortlisted in the dementia outreach category with Caroline’s work being recognised in the dementia nurse category.

Caroline said: “I am absolutely delighted to be a finalist in two categories for the Dementia Care Awards. I’m so proud of the work I have achieved alongside our amazing team of specialist Admiral Nurses, Sarah, Helen and Hayley, and our Assistant Practitioner, Demelza. We all have the same passion and determination to provide the best possible support for carers who are looking after their loved ones who live with dementia.

“We will be flying the flag for Cornwall and our ‘team dementia’ at the awards ceremony and we would like to take this opportunity to thank all services and organisations who are involved in SAP and share our passion and commitment to keep this model alive and thriving to help families and carers.”

The Dementia Care Awards celebrate outstanding practice in dementia services, recognising a commitment to deliver outcome focussed, person centred care for people living with dementia. Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in London on Thursday 13 June.
