Diabetes patient says being on a research trial has totally changed his life

People no longer recognise the 65-year-old from St Blazey, after he lost nearly 6 stone as a result of being on a research trial which aims to improve cardiovascular health.

Edward Bond, aged 65, a retired meat factory worker, was offered a research trial in July 2021 at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust. At the time he had been clinically obese for years and had uncontrolled type 2 diabetes.

Edward accepted the invitation to be on the research trial thinking it could benefit other people’s health in the future. He began to take the trial drug and steadily found it began to change his behaviours towards food after many failed attempts to change his diet in the past.  Edward confesses to having a sweet tooth and was used to enjoying big portions. He still enjoys cooking and baking for his children and grandchildren but now eats much smaller portions.

“Being on this trial has totally transferred my life. It has improved my self-esteem and confidence. I can even now touch my toes after not being able to for many years.” Edward said.

Diabetes Research Nurse, Megan Miners explained “Mr Bond’s diabetes is stable, and his blood pressure, kidney and liver function have since improved.  This is all because of the life-style changes made since joining the study. The changes are remarkable” After initially having hospital visits to check on his progress twice a week, Edward is now being followed up monthly for 5 years.
